Payment Processors Prepare for an Era of Invisible Transactions

In August 2026, a prediction emerged from the payments industry: the familiar checkout page, the form-filling ritual behind nearly every online purchase, is on its way out. “Should you even need to go to one or should you just be able to say, ‘Buy it on a product display page’? I think so,” said the President of Technology and Business at a leading payment processor.

The statement reflects a broader industry belief that the rise of AI agents, software capable of finding products, comparing prices and completing transactions autonomously, will fundamentally reshape online retail, potentially making the checkout page obsolete.

The Disappearing Checkout

The traditional e-commerce journey follows a well-worn path: a customer discovers a product, visits a merchant’s website, adds items to a cart and proceeds through several checkout screens to enter delivery information, choose a payment method and confirm the order.

Agentic commerce challenges almost every step of that model. According to one payment processor’s definition, agentic commerce is online shopping in which AI agents can find, compare and potentially purchase products on users’ behalf. The shopper provides an objective, for example, finding a particular product under a certain price with delivery before a specified date and the agent handles much of the searching and decision-making.

In this environment, the shopper may never need to navigate a conventional checkout page. As one analysis noted, “Customers using an AI agent may not need to see a checkout page at all”. The payment processor’s prediction is that even a “less ambitious form” of agentic commerce could mark the end of checkout pages.

The Invisible Infrastructure

The disappearance of the checkout page does not mean the underlying processes vanish. Merchants would still need to calculate taxes, confirm inventory, determine shipping costs, process payments, prevent fraud, manage orders and handle fulfilment. The difference is that these processes increasingly happen behind the interface. Instead of presenting each step to a human shopper, commerce infrastructure could communicate directly with an AI agent.

Early versions of this frictionless checkout already exist in the form of quick-pay tools. The president of one payment processor pointed to his own company’s “Link” service and a major commerce platform’s “Shop Pay” as early groundwork for where things are headed. These tools already streamline checkout by storing payment credentials and accelerating the purchase process, but agentic commerce would take that concept considerably further by eliminating the page entirely.

Building the Infrastructure for Agentic Commerce

The prediction is not merely theoretical. Payment processors have been actively developing the infrastructure to support agentic commerce over the past year. One company has rolled out an “Instant Checkout” feature within a leading AI chat platform and partnered on developing an “Agentic Commerce Protocol” with AI companies and, more recently, other major technology firms.

The company’s “Agentic Commerce Suite” is described as infrastructure that connects businesses, agents and buyers. Merchants can make their products available to AI agents while maintaining control over pricing, descriptions, fulfilment and the customer relationship. AI applications can then embed checkout directly inside their own interfaces, bypassing the merchant’s website entirely.

This model represents a fundamental shift in the role of the merchant website. Instead of every purchase requiring consumers to reach a retailer’s checkout interface, transactions could increasingly be completed wherever the customer discovers the product. A notable challenge lies in creating payment infrastructure specifically for AI agents, as conventional payment systems were never designed to solve problems like an agent identifying the correct product, confirming availability and comparing shipping options.

The Trust Gap

Despite the industry’s enthusiasm, significant barriers remain. Agentic AI is still relatively new and represents a step beyond conventional chatbots. By design, agentic AI is meant to make proactive decisions with minimal human direction, but in the context of shopping, this means users must entrust AI with real purchasing authority.

A June 2026 survey of online shoppers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia found that consumers remain hesitant to let AI buy without their direct approval. “Consumers want the time and money savings that agentic commerce can deliver, but they aren’t ready to trust agents as an autonomous buyer,” one executive said.

The survey results highlight a critical tension: the convenience of agentic commerce is appealing, but trust has not yet caught up to the technology’s capabilities. The user can adjust the “leash” given to AI tools, meaning the level of autonomy can be dialled up or down. However, the foundational challenge of trusting a machine to spend money on one’s behalf remains unresolved for many consumers.

A Vision of the Future

Despite the current lack of a “breakout moment” for agentic commerce, industry leaders remain bullish. The CEO of a leading payment processor stated, “All the commerce is going agentic… People will still be doing stuff, but they will do it through their agent”.

He illustrated this with an example of trying to buy a bike case: after going back and forth with an AI assistant over what he wanted, he just wanted to be able to hit “buy” rather than fill out web forms, which he described as “not a value-add activity”. This desire to eliminate non-value-adding activities from the shopping process is the driving force behind the push toward checkout-free commerce.

Conclusion

The prediction that checkout pages will disappear represents a significant shift in how the payments industry envisions the future of online shopping. The technology to support agentic commerce, checkout infrastructure, AI partnerships and digital wallets is already being built.

However, the transition will not happen overnight. The “open questions” about how agentic commerce will play out in reality, combined with lingering consumer hesitancy, suggest a gradual evolution rather than an immediate revolution. The checkout page may disappear, but checkout itself will not; it will simply become invisible, embedded in the conversations where consumers discover products and the infrastructure that powers their AI agents.
