Simons of Canada to Open First Net-Zero Energy Location
Quebec City, Quebec-based apparel retailer Simons of Canada has announced plans to open its first net-zero energy flagship next month. Located inside Quebec City’s Galeries de la Capitale mall, the store will span 80,000 sq. ft. in place of a former Simons outpost reimagined in a $19.7 million redesign.
According to wwd.com, the store will feature 27 geothermal boreholes drilled into the ground beneath the parking lot in order to pump heat from the earth to naturally warm the store during the winter and cool the store during warmer months by extracting heat back into the earth. An LED lighting control program will be installed as well as other efficient systems for ventilation. The combination of sustainable technology will yield a reduction in energy consumption by 60 percent compared to the previous location’s footprint. A 220-sq.-ft. sculpture crafted from branches by local artist Giorgia Volpe will also be featured.
Simons of Canada operates 15 stores across Canada.
